Ladies are taking it back!
What do you think????
Hey guys, I’ve been delving into Eric Cressey’s newest program (though it’s not technically “new”) and have been getting a lot from it. If you’re interested, it’s not cheap, but it’s worth it! ESPECIALLY if you are a beginner/intermediate or don’t have a coach of your own:
A lot of time ladies are afraid of “bulking up” when it comes to utilizing weights to get in shape. Many don’t realize that girls have only 1/9th or 1/10th the amount of testosterone available to produce muscle, which means that the same amount of strength training will still produce a feminine look.
Take a look at this video that Mike Robertson forwarded to his mailing list:
These ladies are moving a LOT of weight compared to most women out there, but they still look good. I’m not saying you have to move over 135 lbs to look good, I’m just saying that a LOT of women COULD lift a lot more, increase their lean muscle mass, be healthier, save time in the gym, and STILL LOOK GREAT!!
I’d rather my clients ACTUALLY be strong and lean rather than just APPEAR to be skinny and be weak. And, when you keep in mind that strength training can help to keep osteoporosis away, it is not just something a lady SHOULD do, but it is something all you ladies MUST do!
So what do you think??
Great job by the Gang of Seven who made it out today for a great Strength and Conditioning Bootcamp at Pan Pacific Park in Hollywood! We had one trainee to a bee sting (first time ever for our group – well done C-Go!!) but otherwise we had some great weather and the hour flew by…at least for me. Outdoor workouts are a great way to break the monotony that one can feel going to a gym all the time, and it allows us to do some more movements that aren’t always appropriate for or fit into a gym setting.
For those who are curious as to what a day at Camp Schu is like, here’s a brief run-down of what we did today:
Pre-workout exercises: Shoulder Ext. Rotation, Broomstick Pec Mobilization, band-resisted hip abductor shuffles, db scaption.
GENERAL WARMUP/TECHNIQUE WORK: Warmup jog, dynamic warmup, followed by some running form drills and lateral drills designed to increase speed and move the body in different planes.
COMPETITION: Ladder and running hybrid competition. Each participant shuffled through our 10yd ladder, accelerated forwards 5 yards to a cone, backpedaled to the ladder, lateral shuffle back through the ladder, and finish with a 10 yard sprint. Best time of the day was J-Campy with a 15.8 second time. Nice work!
STRENGTH TRAINING:
Superset 1: Single Leg Romanian Deadlift. Light/med weight. Superset with 10 squat jumps.
Superset 2: Bent over single arm shoulder flys, paired with single arm overhead kneel-to-stand.
Finally, CONDITIONING: 6 hill sprints carrying a medicine ball or baby overhead.
NICE WORK!!!

Thanks to Mama Schu who forwarded me this article, but something we’ve been hearing about for a while has really gained fairly broad acceptance: Cell phone radiation. So while this blog is usually about training tips and motivation, we can’t forget that staying healthy is more than just working out. Now that the WHO is even speaking up about it, there is no reason for us to not adjust our behaviors if we haven’t already, ESPECIALLY if you use your phone a lot. Add up all those hours that the cell phone is pressed next to your ear (hello brain), or in your pocket (hello testes), and common sense dictates we wake up and do something.
Before I head to Minneapolis for an FMS seminar I just wanted to share a video of a speech from the movie “Any Given Sunday” that helps inspire me from time to time when I forget how important every little thing we do is to becoming who we want to be, in sports, fitness, and life.
Enjoy, and have a great weekend!
Since I’ve been on a Timothy Ferris kick as of late, I’ve been looking for ways to “hack” my clients’ lifestyles to help them create the change that they want and deserve. What is a “hack”? Well, » Read more: 5 Steps for Real Healthy Change
A few Saturdays ago, my friend, client, and Jitsu training partner Gabe and I went up to Chatsworth, CA, to attend an MMA seminar put on by “THE LAST EMPEROR” Fedor Emeliananko, who is widely regarded as a top heavyweight MMA fighter and one of the best all-time. Fedor showed some amazingly fast punches and footwork combinations and techniques, answered questions, and even was hands-on with trainees to help them with techniques.
He talked about baiting opponents, counter-strikes, and even revealed a few of his mental approaches to his battles. I have some videos from the shoot which I will try to post at a later date (Photos are courtesy of yours truly and M1-Global.com).
Here are some (abridged) highlights of the notes I took of the words (through an interpreter) and actions of the great Russian fighter:
